Description

Edge computing runs application logic at CDN edge locations distributed worldwide, reducing response latency by processing requests geographically close to the user rather than routing to a centralized origin server. Unlike traditional serverless functions that run in one or a few regions, edge functions deploy to hundreds of points of presence (PoPs) and typically have sub-millisecond cold starts due to lightweight runtime environments.

Major edge computing platforms include Cloudflare Workers (V8 isolates, 0ms cold start), Vercel Edge Functions (built on Cloudflare), Deno Deploy (V8-based with Web API compatibility), and AWS CloudFront Functions / Lambda@Edge. Edge runtimes typically use a subset of Web Standard APIs (fetch, Request/Response, crypto, streams) rather than full Node.js APIs, imposing constraints on available libraries and maximum execution time (usually 10-50ms for CDN-level edge, up to 30s for regional edge).

Edge computing excels for request routing and rewriting, A/B testing and personalization, geolocation-based content customization, authentication token validation, API response transformation, and serving dynamic content that benefits from low latency. Challenges include limited runtime APIs, restricted access to databases (edge-compatible databases like Turso/libSQL, PlanetScale, Neon, or Upstash Redis are required), small bundle size limits, and the inability to use many npm packages that depend on Node.js-specific APIs. The pattern of edge + origin is common: edge handles fast, lightweight operations while proxying complex queries to the origin.
